Westfield Library wins right to move
Full Description:
A petition drive on the site of the Westfield Public Library that drew rally cries from people wanting it to stay at its current location and from others pushing for relocation for expansion is finally over.
The winner of the month-long process – by a 2,187 to 1,790 vote – goes to those who support building a new $16.9 million library at 196th and Tomlinson Road, which is about two miles north of where it is now, 333 W. Hoover St. in downtown Westfield.
“We were pretty excited,” said Sheryl Sollars, director for the Westfield Library. “We did it through a Democratic process, and the people spoke. We are thrilled it came out in our favor.”
Westfield resident Jose Beyer helped put the Democratic process in motion with the initial remonstrance of moving the library – citing it needs to stay in downtown Westfield to be more accessible to schools.
“I was disappointed,” Beyer said of the final tally. “I fought so hard, but I am glad the way the process went through, and I was happy to I had the chance to collect the signatures.”
